Vacation Homes Are Not Only For The Rich And Famous

Isn't this the American dream? A house in the suburbs, two kids, a dog, a picket fence, and vacation homes to spend your weekends and vacations in.

Vacation homes need not be fancy, just a place to get away from your everyday life. Here in the Northeast people frequently have camps, little cottages or trailers, usually near a lake. A lot of them spend every summer weekend "up to camp." I have noticed that many of these have been winterized around Saratoga Lake and people live in their vacation homes year round.

How can you afford a vacation home in this economy? Many people rent their vacation homes out for much of the summer, reserving a few weekends for themselves.

Jekyll Island, Georgia boasts some spectacular vacation homes. Wealthy industrialist from the north built "cottages" on this unspoiled island and spent winters there. I wouldn't exactly call them cottages, more like mansions by today's standards. They did not have kitchens and the families took their meals at the Jekyll Island Club. Most of these cottages have been restored and can be toured today. The Jekyll Island Club is open for business as well.

Conversely many wealthy southerners had vacation homes here in upstate New York in the Saratoga and Lake George areas. Many of the vacation homes in Saratoga are only in use during the summer thoroughbred meet in August. Saratoga comes alive in late July and August.

Another way we ordinary people afford vacation homes is through time shares. Many people buy the right to use the condo or home for a certain number of weeks per year. My own vacation home consists of a comfy lounge on my deck, but I would love to have a little beach house.

The important thing about vacation homes is that it gets you away for a little while. It can be far from your home or close by, but you will enjoy being away from jobs, ringing phones, and all the hassles of your normal life.
